There are more than 37,000 “love hotels” in Japan, which can be rented overnight or by the hour for lovemaking sessions.
They started in the 1960s and are now widely used by everyone from young couples in love to married men and women indulging in affairs.
Many of the hotels have themed rooms, based on the customer’s sexual preferences.
The spaces are steeped in fantasy, with decor ranging from fake subway cars and Greek palaces to religious bondage and pirate ships.
Some of the rooms are more sinister though, with schoolgirl uniforms and children’s bedrooms incorporated as part of the fantasy world.
There are also numerous extras that customers can use during sex, including swings and vending machines that dispense vibrators.
The American photographer Misty Keasler visited many of the love hotels during a visit to Japan for a photography book called Love Hotels: The Hidden Fantasy Rooms of Japan.=read more
